Description
The October 2025 issue of Nagomi features a special focus on NIGO®, one of Japan’s most influential fashion designers, and his long-standing engagement with the art of tea bowl making.
Inspired by the legendary potter Kanjiro Kawai (1878–1963), NIGO® has spent the past decade creating ceramic works alongside his demanding professional career. Traveling to pottery centers such as Hagi, Iga, and Karatsu, he has quietly continued to refine his practice, allowing the spinning wheel to guide his hands.
In 2025, marking both the tenth year of his ceramic journey and his 55th birthday, NIGO® presents an exhibition at the Sekisui Museum in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. This issue introduces 25 of his own tea bowls, carefully selected from his body of work, alongside 55 tea bowls from his personal Handōko-inspired collection, offering rare insight into his aesthetic lineage.
Through behind-the-scenes coverage, essays, and conversations—including a dialogue with the 16th-generation Raku Kichizaemon—this issue traces the making process over six months and reflects on tea bowls not merely as objects, but as vessels shaped by time, touch, and dedication.
By presenting NIGO®’s ceramic practice in dialogue with tea culture, history, and place, this issue offers a nuanced portrait of creativity that transcends genre, profession, and discipline.
