Description
JA No.93 is a special issue devoted to Kazuo Shinohara, widely recognized as one of the most influential architects in postwar Japan.
Shinohara placed exceptional importance on publishing his works in architectural magazines, partly because many of his projects were private houses rarely accessible to the public. Through photographs, drawings, and detailed explanations, he carefully constructed how his architecture would be understood through media. In many ways, his architectural thought survives precisely through these publications.
This issue republishes, as faithfully as possible, original materials first presented in Shinkenchiku and JA, covering his work from the early House in Kugayama (1954) to his unfinished final project, Elementary Geometry of the Tateshina Mountains. These materials were originally produced through close collaboration with Shinohara himself, allowing readers to approach his architecture as he intended it to be seen.
Even after his death in 2006, Shinohara’s work continues to receive international recognition, including the awarding of a Special Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and retrospectives held in China, the United States, and elsewhere. This issue provides insight into why his work continues to resonate across diverse contemporary contexts.
