Description
Hanabi is an early photography book by internationally acclaimed photographer Rinko Kawauchi, created around the period when she received the 27th Kimura Ihei Photography Award, one of Japan’s most prestigious photography honors.
Traveling across Japan—from Osaka and Chiba to Gunma, Kanagawa, and Tokyo—Kawauchi visited racetracks, hot spring towns, riversides, and countless festival sites wherever fireworks were launched. Through her distinctive gentle and observant gaze, she captured not only fireworks themselves but also the atmosphere surrounding summer nights.
The photographs evoke warm evening breezes, children running along riverbanks, clouds gathering before sudden rain, and the sweet scent drifting from festival food stalls. Fireworks bloom brilliantly for a moment before fading, leaving behind a subtle feeling of beauty mixed with quiet melancholy.
Rather than simply documenting fireworks, Kawauchi’s images suggest fleeting memories, sensual elegance, and the emotional traces left behind when the celebration ends. The viewer is invited to wonder what Kawauchi herself saw beyond the fireworks.
Compact yet emotionally rich, Hanabi stands as one of Kawauchi’s formative works and an important early contribution to contemporary Japanese photography.
