Description

Swaying Flowers is the first published photobook by Japanese photographer Ayaka Endo, one of the most exciting emerging voices in contemporary Japanese photography.

This remarkable work originated from a large handmade artist book Endo created during her university graduation project. For this publication, the original work was reimagined and carefully transformed into book form.

Flowers, one of the most important recurring motifs throughout Endo’s artistic practice, are photographed using various cameras and transferred onto fabric. The artist then manually tears the fabric by hand, creating unique forms that blur the boundaries between photography, object, and memory.

Through this process, flowers become transformed by light, material, and gesture. The torn edges preserve a fleeting emotional moment, while the act of binding these fragments into a book gives permanence to something inherently fragile and temporary.

Created before Endo's later exploration of animism, Swaying Flowers provides an important key to understanding the origins of her artistic vision and the development of her unique visual language.

Beautifully produced as a large-format hardcover volume, this collectible edition presents 64 photographic works and includes a bonus postcard.
