Description

The January 2026 issue of a+u features Vector Architects, the Beijing-based architectural practice founded by Gong Dong in 2008.

From its earliest works, Vector Architects has emphasized a close relationship between architecture and its site—whether located by the ocean, in mountainous landscapes, or embedded within the city. The firm carefully studies both natural and artificial landmarks to respond precisely to the unique demands of each project.

While bold architectural gestures such as the Seashore Chapel in Qinhuangdao brought early international attention, more recent projects demonstrate a quieter approach. Works like Jingyang Camphor Court in Jingdezhen retreat into their surroundings, blending structure and urban fabric until the boundary between building and context dissolves.

Materiality and light remain central to the practice, alongside a strong commitment to environmental preservation. This is exemplified by projects such as Liyuan Primary School in Shenzhen, where 18-meter-tall trees form the core of the design.
This issue presents Vector Architects’ ability to grasp the genius loci of each site, making it an essential reference for contemporary architectural practice in East Asia and beyond.
